U.S. Manufacturing Output and Capacity Utilization Dip in August

U.S. industrial production was flat in August 2026, while manufacturing output and capacity utilization declined slightly, according to data cited by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology.

The manufacturing index decreased by 0.3 percentage points during the month, while capacity utilization among manufacturers also edged lower. The August results followed a period of increased investment in manufacturing machinery, with recent equipment orders beginning to reach production facilities.

Christopher Chidzik, principal economist at AMT, said the late-summer decline in production was not unexpected. He attributed part of the movement in capacity utilization to the volume of machinery purchased during the preceding five months.

According to Chidzik, newly purchased machinery can temporarily contribute to lower capacity utilization as manufacturers install and integrate the equipment. Once the machines are incorporated into production operations, the additional capacity can contribute to higher output.

Recent Machinery Investment Could Affect Utilization

The August data comes as U.S. manufacturers continue to invest in production equipment and technology. Capacity utilization measures the extent to which available production capacity is being used, making it a closely watched indicator of manufacturing activity.

A decline in utilization does not necessarily indicate a reduction in available production capacity. In this case, AMT's analysis points to the possibility that recently purchased machinery has increased available capacity before manufacturers have fully incorporated that equipment into production.

Chidzik said capacity utilization could decline further as additional machinery reaches manufacturing facilities. He also said production could increase as manufacturers begin using the new equipment to address market demand.

The relationship between machinery investment, available capacity and actual production will be an important factor to monitor in coming months as manufacturers put recently purchased equipment into operation.
