U.S. Cutting Tool Shipments Total $239.8 Million in May 2026
U.S. manufacturers shipped $239.8 million worth of cutting tools in May 2026, according to the latest Cutting Tool Market Report released by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology and the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI). While shipments declined from the previous month, overall demand remained strong, with year-to-date totals continuing to outpace 2025.
The report found that May shipments decreased 7.4% compared to April 2026 but increased 15.2% from May 2025. Through the first five months of the year, cutting tool shipments reached approximately $1.2 billion, representing a 16.8% increase over the same period in 2025.
Although the number of cutting tools shipped declined for the second consecutive month following gains in February and March, industry leaders noted that shipment values remained elevated across most product categories.
According to Jack Burley, chairman of AMT's Cutting Tool Product Group and president of Big Daishowa, carbide-based cutting tools—including drills and end mills—have experienced noticeable increases in cost per unit due to ongoing shortages of tungsten and other raw materials.
Burley said continued demand from the metalworking industry has placed additional pressure on already constrained tungsten supplies, contributing to rising tool prices. He added that manufacturers may benefit from evaluating machining efficiency and extending tool life as costs continue to climb.
Industry analysts also pointed to broader manufacturing activity as a positive indicator for cutting tool demand.
Eli Lustgarten, president of ESL Consultants, said shipment growth continues to reflect both strong manufacturing demand and higher material costs driven by supply chain constraints. He noted that construction equipment, defense, and aerospace manufacturing remain key sectors supporting demand for machined components.
Lustgarten also cited easing oil prices and softer employment data as factors that could help stabilize interest rates, while suggesting the manufacturing outlook for the second half of 2026 remains positive, assuming no significant geopolitical disruptions.
The Cutting Tool Market Report is published monthly through a collaboration between AMT and USCTI. The report tracks U.S. cutting tool shipments and is widely regarded as a leading indicator of manufacturing activity because cutting tools are essential consumables used in metalworking and production operations. Trends in cutting tool consumption often provide early insight into changes in industrial production, capital investment, and manufacturing demand.
Despite the month-over-month decline in shipment value, the May report indicates that the U.S. manufacturing sector continues to experience healthy demand, with year-to-date cutting tool shipments maintaining double-digit growth compared to 2025.
