Saint-Gobain Abrasives, a prominent abrasives manufacturer, has introduced new 2- and 3-inch "Mini" sizes to its Norton Vortex Rapid Prep Non-Woven Flap Disc Line. These new additions are designed to provide an ergonomic solution for deburring, blending, and finishing tasks in hard-to-reach, uneven areas.

The expanded line incorporates Norton's patented Vortex agglomerate grain technology, which the company states allows for the cutting power typically associated with coarser grits while achieving a finer finish in a single operation. This technology aims to offer increased cutting rates and smear-free finishes, contributing to longer disc life.

Michael Radaelli, Senior Product Manager at Norton | Saint-Gobain, commented on the expansion, noting that the new Mini Flap Discs offer a full range of sizes intended to reduce grinding steps and enhance productivity. He added that these smaller discs provide operators with an ergonomic option for light grinding applications, offering reduced vibration and forgiveness on uneven surfaces.

The Norton non-woven Flap Discs are suitable for light blending, stripping, edge breaking, and surface preparation. They are applicable across various industries including metal fabrication, welding, aerospace, transportation, energy, and construction. The discs feature special three-dimensional non-woven abrasive layers, designed for uniform finishing and consistently low surface finish Ra.

The multi-layered surface conditioning material in the discs is intended to extend product life, reduce the frequency of disc changes, improve efficiency, and minimize vibration. Additionally, Norton's Clean Bond® resin technology is featured, which the company states ensures smear-free finishes, even on high nickel content alloys, and reduces loading when working with aluminum and other softer metals. These flap discs are also designed for cleaning, light deburring, and processing TIF welded seams on stainless steel.

Norton Vortex Rapid Prep "Type TR" Flap Discs are available in 2-inch and 3-inch sizes, while "Type 27" Discs are offered in 4-1/2ʺ x 7/8ʺ and 4-1/2ʺ x 5/8ʺ-11 sizes. The complete line is available in very fine, fine, medium, and coarse grits.
